Standing with Sudan: Support communities affected by conflict and displacement. Support the response

Community development

Strengthening local capacity for resilient communities

TUSIC seeks to support Sudanese communities in developing the skills, relationships and locally led initiatives needed to create opportunity, strengthen participation and build long-term resilience.

Beyond immediate response

Communities need opportunity as well as emergency support

Humanitarian assistance can help people address urgent needs, but long-term wellbeing also depends on skills, livelihoods, participation, functioning community institutions and the ability to shape a shared future.

Conflict and displacement can interrupt education, employment, local services, social networks and community decision-making. Recovery therefore requires more than rebuilding physical infrastructure.

TUSIC’s community-development approach seeks to build on the knowledge, initiative and leadership already present within Sudanese communities.

From priorities to action

Development begins with communities, not assumptions

Proposed initiatives should respond to an identified need, build on existing local capacity and include a realistic plan for participation, safety and sustainability.

01

Listen

Understand community priorities, capabilities, barriers and existing local initiatives.

02

Define

Agree on the need being addressed, intended participants and realistic objectives.

03

Co-design

Develop an appropriate activity with community participation and clear responsibilities.

04

Support

Deliver an approved initiative with suitable oversight, safeguarding and resource controls.

05

Learn

Review participation, results, challenges and what should change in future work.

Sustainable development

Good programs strengthen capacity instead of dependency

Sustainability does not mean that every activity continues forever. It means considering whether skills, relationships, knowledge or community systems can remain useful after the initial intervention ends.

Our mission and values
01

Build on local strengths

Recognize existing community knowledge, skills, networks and leadership.

02

Plan for continuation

Consider ownership, maintenance, resources and responsibilities beyond initial support.

03

Avoid unrealistic promises

Communicate clearly about funding, duration, eligibility and what TUSIC can reasonably provide.

04

Learn and adapt

Use community feedback and appropriate evidence to improve future decisions.

Inclusive participation

Community development should create room for diverse voices

Participation is meaningful when people have accessible ways to influence priorities and decisions—not simply attend an activity designed without them.

01 Women and girls

Address participation barriers and recognize leadership and economic contribution.

02 Young people

Create age-appropriate opportunities for learning, leadership and participation.

03 Persons with disabilities

Consider physical, communication and institutional accessibility.

04 Displaced communities

Recognize interrupted networks, documentation barriers and unfamiliar local systems.

Important program information

No grant, employment or financial-assistance offer is implied

This page describes TUSIC’s intended areas of community- development work. It does not guarantee funding, employment, training admission, business investment, grants or financial assistance. Any available opportunity must have separate eligibility requirements, an approved application process and clearly published terms.

Measuring progress

Participation numbers alone do not demonstrate lasting change

Responsible evaluation should look beyond attendance and consider whether an initiative was relevant, inclusive, safely delivered and useful to participants over time.

01

Relevance

Did the initiative address a community-defined priority?

02

Participation

Could intended participants influence and access it?

03

Capability

Did participants strengthen useful knowledge or skills?

04

Sustainability

Can benefits, knowledge or relationships continue?
