TUSIC is establishing the editorial and safeguarding process required to publish stories responsibly. No fictional or unapproved personal account is being presented as authentic.

Editorial process
From participation to responsible publication
Submitting or recording a story does not automatically authorize publication. Every story requires review and a documented disclosure decision.
Discuss
Explain the story purpose, proposed format, audience and possible publication channels.
Consent
Confirm voluntary participation and document what the contributor has agreed may be used.
Develop
Record or draft the story respectfully, without pressuring the contributor to disclose sensitive details.
Review
Check accuracy, dignity, privacy, safeguarding, security and public-interest considerations.
Confirm
Allow the contributor to review the proposed story where appropriate before publication.
Publish and manage
Publish only approved material and maintain a process for corrections, concerns or withdrawal requests.
Dignity in storytelling
People should not be defined only by crisis
A responsible story recognizes the contributor’s choices, knowledge, relationships and identity. It avoids portraying people merely as helpless recipients of assistance.
Show how people make decisions, contribute and lead.
Do not generalize one person’s experience to a whole community.
Avoid degrading, intrusive or unnecessarily distressing visuals.
Explain relevant circumstances without sensationalism.
Safety before publication
Consent alone does not make every story safe to publish
TUSIC may anonymize, delay, limit or decline publication when a story could expose the contributor, relatives, communities, staff, volunteers or partners to retaliation, stigma, exploitation or another foreseeable risk.
Heightened protection
Some stories require additional safeguards
Stories involving children, survivors of violence, people facing legal or immigration uncertainty and others at heightened risk require specialized review.
Children and young people
Use age-appropriate participation, child safeguarding and parental or guardian authorization where required.
Survivors and witnesses
Avoid retraumatization, unnecessary detail and any disclosure that may affect safety or accountability processes.
Displaced people
Consider immigration, family, housing, employment and community risks before identification.
Protected identities
Use anonymity, pseudonyms, obscured imagery or withheld locations when appropriate.
